TOSHACK showed significant improvement when doing late work to find 4th over 8f here at eye-watering 100/1 odds. The winner has franked the form nicely and now upped to 10f we can see her put another foot forward for the Jardine team. VERTICE was a decent enough 5th at this level at Newcastle but seems better over further so can’t get the outright nod.

Race 2 – Newcastle Racecourse
LUKOUTOLDMAKEZEBAK took a step back toward form when 3rd over C&D in the handicaps. Now back at classified level at a course he does well at, we could see a big run. ONE PUNCH TERRI could prove the most troublesome, dropping back to an ideal trip following a very respectable 3rd here over the extended 12f.

CEPHALUS is having the time of his life of late, winning a superb hat trick latest, capped off with a C&D win. He is up just 3lb for the effort and doesn’t look to have hit his ceiling just yet. SPARKA went down by ½ a length when runner-up to the selection and can fill the same role in a tiny field.

Race 4 – Newcastle Racecourse
SAULIRE STAR showed enough when 4th on yard bow for Tim Easterby over 10f here. A drop back to the mile could see her build on the effort nicely. PUBLICIST can be forgiven for a misfire at Southwell toward the end of December. Her prior 3rd over C&D sees her a bid player, especially off 4lb lighter.

LOOK OUT LOUIS was 2nd to a clever sort at Yarmouth over this trip when last sighted in September. Returning to the AW where he has shown a lot of potential, we can see his consistency rewarded. ORNATE is respected as a veteran 9 year old who while past his prime, clearly still has some tricks up his sleeve after landing ½ a length 2nd over this trip at Wolverhampton 10 days ago. A 1lb lower mark can do nothing but aid his chances.

Race 6 – Newcastle Racecourse
ANTIPHON raced too keenly when 5th in his post-maiden outing at Lingfield latest over 6f. The return to minimum trip and the benefit of the run can see him sharpen enough with the steady hand of David Probert on the reins. FIREBOMB scored nicely at Southwell last month and the 4lb hike leaves the door open for a follow-up bid.

SWINTON kicked things off with plenty to promise when 5th over C&D back in November. The 6th that day has gone on to land a superb hat trick. Back from a spell, Ed Bethell’s gelding could put the lesson to work. DION BAKER was also 5th on his own debut albeit over turf at Doncaster. He represents Kevin Ryan who trained the winner of this last year so must be seriously considered.

INTERVENTION has really come into his own since joining Mick Appleby, getting better and better over the AW. Back down to 6f in cheekpieces, he can gain compensation for his neck defeat at Lingfield before a scheduled 3lb rise. THAKI was denied an opening when hunting for a 4 streak at Lingfield and has to be respected if he gets a more forgiving run here.
