Raging Bull demolishes field on way to breeders’ Cup?

  • Raging Bull gets clear to win $300,000 Shoemaker Mile
  • Wins entry to the Breeders’ Cup
  • Favourite gets caught in heavy traffic
  • War of Will disqualified by stewards

On Memorial Day at Santa Anita Park, Raging Bull by name and by nature destroyed his competitors to win the G1 Shoemaker Mile to earn entry into the Breeders’ Cup.

Raging Bull made a barnstorming run on the outside and demolished the field to win comfortably in the end by three lengths.

He beat off a strong field of company, and in doing so will feature in the Mile at Keeneland in November.

The G1 Shoemaker is the first North American-based Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event of 2020.

Short-priced favourite Without Parole got caught in traffic and was buried on the inside and at the final turn, couldn’t find space to make his run.

Perhaps what’s more remarkable is the ground Raging Bull was forced to cover to get into a winning position.

As he began to enter the far turn, Raging Bull tipped out six-wide and circled most of the field before straightening for home with a slight lead.

Trained by Chad Brown, Raging Bull finished well-clear of his rivals in a final time of 1:32.72 for the firm turf route.

“He broke well and it looked like there was a good pace, he was very controlled,” jockey Joel Rosario said post race.

“He just came with his run like he does all the time. He put in a nice run.”

Raging Bull’s win was his first since taking the Hollywood Derby (G1) at Del Mar in December 2018 and improved his overall record to 13-6-2-2.

The French-bred 5-year-old son of Dark Angel became racing’s newest millionaire when the $180,000 winner’s share of the purse bumped his career earnings mark to $1,100,750.
