1 – MARIETTA LANE

Barrier: 1 Trainer: F J Auret Rider: Wiremu Pinn

Checked late in LR Marton at Awapuni earlier in the month. A solid enough 4th in G3 Manuwatu Cup in December. Has won here before, not over this trip. Good rider in plate but a strange one to weather top weight. Not the worst option but plenty of better chances carrying less.

2 – LINCOLN KING

Barrier: 9 Trainer: S B Marsh Rider: Craig Grylls

Didn’t show best when a wide 8th when last sighted in a BM74. Better example of potential when 2nd in Taupo Cup at end of December. Prior to that a promising 4th in NZ Cup at this level. Definitely capable of this but will require career-best.

3 – MONRODANI

Barrier: 7 Trainer: K T Myers Rider: Sarah McNab

Nothing special in 7th here last week or when 8th in Greymouth Cup. Still, won the G3 NZ Cup and that form is a decent thing to rest on your laurels. Plenty of market support, a big chance but does have to leave past couple of runs in the past.

4 – STARRYBEEL

Barrier: 14 Trainer: S B Marsh Rider: Michael McNab

Gets bonus points on riding arrangements but has to bounce back a bit. Was a respectable 4th in G3 City of Auckland when launching from the back. Cannot understate how well he works with Michael McNab, consider seriously in all bets.

5 – FIRODEN

Barrier: 11 Trainer: L A Beck Rider: Leah Hemi

Has found the frame a few times of late, not a bad runner from the South Island but trip suitability is taken completely on trust. Probably not worth including unless you plan on going wide with exotics.

6 – SCRATCHED

Barrier:  Trainer:  Rider:

7 – SKYPHYTA

Barrier: 12 Trainer: P M Goodwin Rider: Mereana Hudson

Hasn’t been able to land a blow at this level of late, could find a way into the top 4 but for win purposes doesn’t have appeal. Look elsewhere in that regard.

8 – MASTER FIN

Barrier: 5 Trainer: M K Oulaghan Rider: Chris Dell

Managed 3rd in Manawatu despite some bleeding in December. He is proven here as well as over the trip elsewhere. A bit old for this, could have top 4 aspirations but even that is a tough task here.

9 – UAREASTAR

Barrier: 17 Trainer: F J Auret Rider: Matthew Cameron

Respectable 3rd in LR Marton Cup earlier in the month, beaten less than a length. Managed to edge out a nostril victory at Awapuni preceding. Attracting strong market support, would relish any cut in the ground. Include in all bets at this point, especially if there is rain.

10 – NOTABADHARADA

Barrier: 4 Trainer: C T Faulkner Rider: Darren Danis

Away slowly in Karaka Cup, made up well to land 2nd. Took out an open handicap at same track on penultimate run. Has proven a decent recruit to this corner of the world. Bred for jumping but has shown plenty of mettle on flat. Serious chance here from a nice draw.

11 – WANNABE ‘N’ PARIS

Barrier: 8 Trainer: P D Harris Rider: Courtney Barnes

Went too hard too early in Kumara Open Handicap, found a decent enough 4th. Hasn’t done much else of note but could surprise if allowed an unfettered lead. Probably pick of the roughies.

12 – ROSE OF DELGATIE

Barrier: 15 Trainer: F J Auret Rider: Ashvin Mudhoo

Justified market support when home at Tauherenikau latest, looks a bit outclassed here. Probably worth looking elsewhere.

13 – SULU SEA

Barrier: 10 Trainer: D Champion & K Murphy Rider: Darryl Bradley

Put forth a decent effort in 4th in Wingatui Waikouaiti Cup a couple of weeks back. Respectable 6th in NZ cup, has a bit of work to do but isn’t out of it entirely. Possible top 4 aspirant?

14 – BLUEY’S CHANCE

Barrier: 6 Trainer: Kennedy Moore Rider: Joe Kamaruddin

Hasn’t left a positive impression of late, gets a mention for filling runner up berth in last year’s iteration of this at eye-watering $130 price but is seriously out of shape and looks a bit past it. Probably worth skipping over.

15 – HE NO OPILIO

Barrier: 18 Trainer: Chris Rauhihi Rider: Sam Weatherley

Showed a step in right direction when 3rd here in BM74 but still this is such a massive up in task he looks unlikely to land a blow. Save some flexi and toss him.

16 – THAT’S INCRANIBULL

Barrier: 16 Trainer: Emma Davies Rider: Robert Hannam

Went too hard too early when last sighted and made no impression. Is a local winner but is another going way up in class who should prove outclassed. Look elsewhere.

17 – BECAUSE

Barrier: 2 Trainer: R R Manning Rider: Ashvin Goindasamy

Fish out of water, if you like a roughie for a small wager go for it but not one to take too seriously here.

18 – PLATINUM SPIRIT

Barrier: 13 Trainer: L Latta Rider: Taiki Yanagida

Course winner but not much else to praise, this is a serious jump in grade. Another to bin.
